What inspired you to choose an apprenticeship as your next step?
I knew someone who was doing an apprenticeship, and that really inspired me to do an one too. I heard about the benefits of doing an apprenticeship, how it would allow me to work and learn at the same time, and how the knowledge I gain could be directly applied to my work.
Can you remember a moment when you felt trusted with real responsibility? What did that involve?
I remember a moment as an apprentice when I was asked to present a service demonstration at Gaming Tech Week. I was given the responsibility to conduct a live walkthrough of the most popular games and gaming-related services, such as streaming platforms. I also explored interactive gamer communities and their associated safety considerations, including livestreams and online forums.
What stands out as the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship experience?
The most rewarding aspect of my apprenticeship was earning two qualifications and graduating from the University of Kent, which was one of my greatest and proudest moments.
What challenges did you face during your apprenticeship, and how did you grow from them?
At the start of my apprenticeship, I really struggled with communication since I had just finished sixth form. It felt overwhelming, and I found it hard to communicate with others. My Career Performance Manager at Ofcom was incredibly supportive. He helped me work on my communication skills and gave me great advice on how to improve even more. Over time, I started to feel more comfortable networking with colleagues and engaging in conversations with new people during meetings.
What’s helped you feel supported during your apprenticeship?
Throughout my time doing an apprenticeship, I felt I had made the right decision. I learned a lot during this experience, as it allowed me to focus on my work. I gained valuable skills that I didn't have before, such as being responsible with money, which I wouldn't have been able to acquire elsewhere. I know that without this apprenticeship, my communication skills would not be as strong as they are now.
"Going back to my sixth form to share my experience with students was very rewarding for me."
Can you tell us about what life at work has been like since you finished your apprenticeship?
After I finished my apprenticeship, I did a secondment in the Online Safety Tech team for 6 months, and I am currently working as a Weapons Portfolio Policy Assistant in the Online Safety Group.
